The Microsoft Word 97-2003 Document file format is a word processing file format used by Microsoft Word in versions of Microsoft Office prior to Office 2007. It extends Microsoft's Compound File Binary Format.

The DOT extension (for DOcument Template) is commonly used to signify Microsoft Word 97-2003 templates. The file format is exactly the same; therefore, any Microsoft Word document can be made into a template by changing the file extension to DOT.
