A plain text file is a text file containing plain text.

'Plain text' is a term used for an ordinary "unformatted" sequential file readable as textual material without much processing.

Plain text files are commonly used as a standard in programming language source code and configuration files. Plain text files are also used to define higher levels of text that can be rendered with formatting such as Rich Text Format.
